Lee Guggenheim of Deerfield will be shopping for an energy-saving and water-saving washer and dryer, both with front-loading doors, when he next upgrades his appliances.
“Three years ago, there was a great disparity in price between a top-loading and a front-loading washer, but now they are much more reasonably priced,” said Guggenheim, a teacher at an alternative high school in Waukegan.
With a “cash for appliances” program set for April 16 to 25 in Illinois, shoppers such as Guggenheim can save money on energy-efficient appliances and take advantage of new technology that may make doing the laundry easier.
The latest appliances, demonstrated at a recent Sears appliance showcase, allow shoppers to customize settings, much like a ring-tone download lets you give your phone a unique ring.
One example is the newest line of Kenmore Elite High Efficiency front-loading washers and dryers. An LED ring lights up in blue around the chrome knob to alert you to choose a setting. If you customize options (you can just hit “start,” if you want to keep it simple), a list lights up so you can set water temperature, pinpoint the level of dirt and enable the washer to monitor temperature and detergent type so it can adjust the wash cycle.
The new Kenmore High Efficiency washers and dryers range in price from $699 and to $1,599.
Illinois “cash for appliances” program, which aims to get people to buy energy-efficient appliances, requires no trade-ins, unlike last year’s “cash for clunkers” car program, but it offers an incentive to recycle old appliances.
Illinois’ $12.4 million share of federal funding enables the state to offer rebates at the cash register of 15 percent off new home appliances that are Energy Star-rated, starting in mid-April.
The buyer will get an additional $50 to $100 mail-in rebate if the old appliance gets hauled off for recycling. Old appliances that use refrigerants will get the higher rebate.
